Few people know that the scientific name of the Lucky bamboo or Fortune Bamboo is Dracaena sanderiana. And consequently few even know that the Lucky Bamboo, even if it seems so, it is not a bamboo but a dracena just like the log of happiness is, for example.

This plant has African origins, comes from Cameroon, and over time it has gained a reputation as a plant that brings good luck, which is why the deceptive but suitable name of lucky bamboo, or "lucky bamboo", has emerged.

Today it is not difficult even in our part to find on the market some examples of lucky bamboo of various sizes, both to be kept in a corner at home, and to be placed in the center of the living room. They can in fact measure 15 centimeters in height or even one meter. They have branches of a bright green color, often arranged in a spiral, in fact the branches are usually placed horizontally and turned periodically. The leaves also have a nice green color, are shiny and lanceolate.

Dracaena sanderiana: diseases

While being one lucky plant, and brings good luck, it can be attacked by parasites, for example by plant mites such as the spider mite. These little animals cause the leaves to turn yellow and appear speckled with yellow and brown and can even fall off. The spider mite is one of the greatest enemies of Dracaena sanderiana which, to be saved, should be washed with soap and water and rinsed.

There are cases where this plant suffers but due to mistakes made by us, while we try to grow it to the fullest. If we have placed it in an environment that is too cold or too dry, or we have forgotten to wet it, or we have exaggerated with fertilizations, the leaves may turn brown. This happens even if the plant is exposed to direct sun. If, on the other hand, the leaves tend to turn very pale green, we need to move the plant to a brighter area. The trunk can also turn yellow and if that happens, it is due to the fact that fertilizations are too abundant, it is better to reduce them.

Dracaena sanderiana: cultivation

We have seen that cultivation errors are paid for, but we must not think that there Dracaena sanderiana is a difficult plant to breed. After all, it does not require special care and is also well suited to our climate, even if it does not resemble that of the areas it comes from.

We can first choose whether to breed the Dracaena in water or on land. If we are at the first experience, it is better to opt for cultivation in water, which is much less problematic. Just have a high-rimmed bowl full of water to insert the branch into, supporting it with river pebbles so that it stays upright.

This can happen if the pot is large. Let's remember not to overdo it with water, as long as the roots are immersed.
In case you choose to grow the Dracaena sanderiana in the ground, let's get a good fertile soil to which we can add draining material which can be sand or expanded clay. The important thing is that it manages to avoid the formation of water stagnation.

Optimal temperatures for the Lucky Bamboo range from 18 ° C to 25 ° C, there is a little elasticity but it is essential that it never falls below 10 ° C and that it does not occur in sudden changes in temperature and air currents. We also avoid direct sunlight because it would risk burning the leaves.

Obviously if we are growing in water, watering is not necessary, as long as the roots are always immersed. There is a risk of forming algae, therefore it is better to choose a non-transparent vase because the sunlight favors their presence. When they are present we realize it because the water becomes cloudy and the vase opaque and it is necessary to clean the container and change the water completely. For fertilization, very little fertilizer is needed to be added to the water once a month, but only in the summer.

If we put our trunk on the ground let's remember to give it water very frequently, so that the soil is always slightly moist. During the summer, to prevent the the tips of the leaves dry up, let's get used to misting the leaves frequently with possibly non-calcareous water. Only during the summer it is necessary to fertilize the plant once a month by adding fertilizer to the watering water

Lucky bamboo cannot be pruned but remember to remove the leaves when they dry. For the multiplication we proceed by cuttings, taking a shoot from the mother plant and putting it to root in water. When the roots sprout you can decide whether to cultivate the Once the roots have developed, you put the Dracaena sanderiana in the ground or in water.

For cut the sprout disinfected scissors must be used to avoid infecting the tissues, also the branch of the mother plant from which the cutting was taken must then be cut about 1-2 centimeters below the point from which the sprout was taken to make the cutting .
