The flowers are small and white but gathered in an umbrella so as to appear voluminous. They may recall, at times, those of the Ivy and it is no coincidence, since the two genders belong to the same family.

The fruits of the Fatsia they are not noteworthy black berries, while the leaves are quite evident and also decorative. They are of considerable size, are webbed - lobed and feature 7 to 11 lobes. They have a dark green color on the upper page and light green in the lower one, they can measure up to half a meter in width, while the plant in total can measure up to 5 meters in height.

Fatsia Japonica

Let's go immediately to discover the Fastia Japonica which is the species that gives the name to this article. It is not the only one in existence from one of the few belonging to this genus that can now be used for ornamental purposes. This is why this is the most cultivated and widespread species, although it can also be found growing spontaneously in the woods. The countries in which it is found are Japan and South Korea.

La Japonica has a shrubby habit, has very long leaves, even 40 centimeters, a strong green color, and blooms in autumn. This species also has various cultivars including the Varied, characterized by leaves with a wide margin at the apex of the lobes of a creamy yellow color, and theaura, with variegated, slow-growing leaves. Then there is also the Marginata, with deep-lobed leaves of gray-green color and white margins.

Fatsia: diseases

These plants can be attacked by plant and plant mites mealy cochineal. The latter is manifested by the presence of spots, very often on the underside of the leaves, which come off if scratched with the fingernail. To get rid of the cochineal it is necessary to remove the stains with a cotton swab soaked in alcohol or wash the entire plant with water and neutral soap, gently removing the parasites.

When the leaves begin to turn yellow and, at the same time, yellow and brown spots appear, an attack by a mite is in progress. Spider webs can also appear, and then it is the red spider, to be made to disappear by increasing the frequency of nebulizations to the canopy to raise the humidity level. In severe cases it is also possible to use a specific insecticide. Even the aphids are enemies of Fatsia. They are small white-yellowish-greenish insects that must be removed or killed with specific pesticides.

There are other diseases of Fatsia, more related to the way we treat them. For example, if we are giving too little fertilizer, the leaves appear faded and pale green, it is necessary to increase the doses immediately. When the environment is too hot and the humidity level is not sufficient, then the leaves can curl up and thin out, it is better to take the plant to a cooler place and spray it frequently to get it back.

Fatsia: cultivation

To successfully grow these plants it is important that the temperatures are between 10 ° C and 18 ° C. In winter, if it gets cold, it is important to check that the earth remains dry, if the plant is outdoors, if it is in an apartment, it is necessary to ensure that it is not too close to heating because it could dry out and die. In summer, when temperatures are well above 18 ° C, it is best to place the plant in a ventilated place where it is but away from direct sunlight.

The leaves require a lot of attention Fatsia, large and green, to keep clean and healthy, wiping them with a very soft and damp cloth. In summer you can also bathe the plant in the bathtub or in the garden, which is much more comfortable.

Speaking of water, let's see how to water it. Very, especially in summer and spring, both because it is large and because it has very large leaves. The soil must always be moist but not too much, better to use a saucer and spray the leaves regularly.

The beginning of spring is the time of repotting for this genus of plants, a fertile soil consisting of peat and slightly acid reaction leaf soil is needed. We always take great care to avoid water stagnation, it helps the use of terracotta pots that favor the breathing of the earth.
