There tension headache, or tension headache, is the most common type of headache. Although it is difficult to say precisely how widespread it is, given that the estimates are very different from each other, it is still certain that most people suffer from tension headache at least once in their life.

But what are the symptoms of this condition? What are the causes? And how is it treated?

Let's find out together!

Symptoms of tension headache

The tension headaches they are usually perceived due to the presence of a "sore band" on the forehead. They can last from a few hours (more frequently) to several days (more rarely), and as a rule, while uncomfortable and tiring, they do not disturb sleep. Most people can continue to work and carry out their usual activities, given that the discomfort does not get worse with physical activity. On the other hand, there may be some sensitivity to light or noise.

These tension headaches are usually felt on both sides of the head (but most often in the front).

The causes of tension headache

The causes of tension headache they are not clear. Although in some cases it develops as a result of muscle tension, in other cases tension headaches appear for no apparent reason.

However, we can summarize that most of the causes of this condition are attributable to:

  • emotional tension, anxiety, fatigue or stress,
  • physical tension in the neck muscles,
  • eye tension,
  • hunger,
  • physical factors such as sunlight, cold, heat, noise, etc.

It is also established that genetics can also be a risk factor. Thus, some people may inherit a tendency to be more prone to developing tension headaches than others when they are stressed or anxious.

Treatment of tension headache

You can cope with tension headache with several treatments.

Of course, the best thing to do is try to figure out what is giving you a headache! Having said that, it is also true that even simple lifestyle changes can help: a walk, a little exercise or simply a break from the normal routine can be of great support in finding better well-being.

Among the other more practical remedies, we can certainly include a neck and shoulder massage, the application of a warm cloth on the neck, the reduction of caffeine drunk, greater hydration, a healthier and more balanced diet. It can also help reduce the thickness of the pillow on which you sleep.

In the event that the annoyances are particularly persistent, the most common pain relievers they usually play a very active role in relieving tension headaches. In any case, don't overdo it - you should never take pain relievers for headaches for more than a couple of days, and you should always consult your doctor before doing so.

The first medicine in this area is certainly paracetamol. As soon as the headache begins, a full dose can be taken: timeliness is very important, because immediate intake of the medicine can prevent the headache more effectively than treating it after it has fully developed.

Alternatives to paracetamol are ibuprofen-based medicines. Again, some recommendations are useful: although they are particularly effective in stopping headaches, some people experience the development of side effects such as stomach problems. It is for this reason that many doctors suggest trying first with paracetamol, which is generally better tolerated by the body.

In short, as we have been able to recall in the last few lines, the tension headache it can be the result of a long series of causes and, at times, it is not even known what the determining factor that triggered this condition is.

Precisely for this reason, and to avoid taking treatments that may not be able to bring a stable benefit to your well-being, our suggestion can only be to talk to your doctor about your health conditions, especially if the problem it tends to repeat itself frequently, and if the main natural remedies, and the changes in one's state of life, have not provided the desired results.
